DIY Foot Care

It’s summer time, time for shorts, tank tops, summer dresses, flip flops, and cute little sandals. I have cute little feet, I try to keep my toes manicured but, I have a difficult time keeping the heels of my feet properly moisturized.

I admire other people that do not have this issue but admiring them doesn’t help when its time to show off MY feet.

I use a hard pumice stone on feet everyday, which helps, but it does not solve the problem.

I used to get regular pedicures, but money is tight around my house, and I can’t bring myself to spend money on my feet. I have a foot scraper but I’ve gotten overzealous with the tool and scraped off too many layers of skin. NOT COOL

I also have a pedegg, but I seem to have the same results as my pumice stone. It works but not as well as I need it to.

I assume all of you are going through the same issues that I am. Lets attack this problem feet first.

I found and tried all of these foot scrubs, soaks, moisturizers, and peels. They all worked and now my feet are kissable.

Enjoy these DIY feet treatments and wear your flip flops and sandals with pride this summer.

Lets Make A Kite!

Lets Go Fly a Kite
Up to the Highest Height
Lets Go Fly a Kite and Send it Soaring
UP in the atmosphere
UP where the air is clear
Lets Go Flyyyyyy
Fly a Kite!!!

I loved Mary Poppin’s growing up, what’s not to love, her name says it all! That love was rekindled once I watched “Saving Mr. Banks.” I also love flying kites, it gives me a sense of pride and accomplishment once I get my  kite up in the air. Growing up, I even remember ‘Kite Day’ at my elementary school. I’m pretty sure schools don’t do that anymore, but they should.

This week self improvement challenge was to fly a kite.

Today I’m going to teach you how to make a kites. Kites can run anywhere from 99 cents -$100.00. I’m a DIY girl so it’s only natural I try my hand at making my own kite. I got all of my supplies at the 99cent store

If you try this tutorial let me know. I would love to see some pictures

Traditional Diamond Kite

Materials Needed:
Construction Paper
String
Pipe Cleaners or sticks, wooden bbq skewers also work
Color pencils/markers optional
Tape optional
Ruler

1. Get construction paper to form the body of your kite

  • If you have to tape 4 pieces of paper together make sure to securely tape them or your kite will not fly

2. Cut a diamond

  • Diamond needs to be a slightly bottom heavy
  • Your left and right corners should be around 3inches from the top

3. Tie 2 sticks together

  • Line them up with paper
  • Make the tie as tight as possible *It must be secure or your kite will not fly
  • Knot string and cut any excess string

4. Make 4 small holes in the diamond shaped paper at each corner

  • Thread string through each hole and around each stick
  • Leave a little extra string at the top to thread a ribbon on optional
  • Knot the stick in place to the kite itself

5. Tie a string to the right and left sides of the horizontal stick

6. Tie string to the center of that string for your flying line

  • This string needs to be as long as you need for flying

7. Tie on paper or ribbon to the corners to form the tail

Your Done!!! Now go fly your kite!!!

How to fly a kite:
Fine a breeze or some light wind
Wind should be coming towards you not from behind

It only took me 10 minutes to make this kite. I won’t know until tomorrow if it flies or not. I’ll post pictures no matter what!

Blessings,
Mary

What is a Serving Size?

Hi Friends,

What is 1 serving?

Serving sizes have always stumped me. What does 1 serving size actually looks like. I challenged all of you to add more fruit to your diet this week, hopefully you’re striving to reach 5 servings a day. Today it only seems appropriate to educate you, and myself, on what 1 serving of fruit, vegetables, grains, dairy and meat looks like. Is it 50 grapes or 5 grapes, 2 kiwis or 1 kiwi, 1 hamburger or a double cheese burger. Today we are going to get to the bottom of servings sizes, how to measure them, and few more random facts.

What is a serving?

When I looked it up I was surprised that there wasn’t a straight forward answer, pleasantly surprised. I don’t do well with general statements, I need detail and that’s exactly what this particular definition provided.

Grains

bread, cereal, rice, pasta *whole grains are best
1 serving size = 1 slice of bread
1 serving size = 1 cup of ready made cereal
1 serving size = 1/2 cup of cooked cereal (oatmeal), rice, pasta
1 serving size = 1/2 cup of couscous
1 serving size = 1/2 cup of farro
Vegetables

1 serving size = 1 cup raw leafy vegetables
1 serving size = 1/2 cup of vegetables corn, peas, sweet potatoes
1 serving size = 3/4 cups of vegetable juice
1 serving size = 1 small 3oz potato
1 serving size = 1 cup or 4 spears of asparagus
1 serving size = 2 medium carrots
1 serving size = 2 celery stalks
1 serving size = 1/4 of a head of cauliflower

Fruit

1 serving size = 1 med apple, banana, orange, pear…
1 serving size = 1 cup diced melon
1 serving size = 16 grapes
1 serving size = 6 strawberries or 1 cup strawberries
1 serving size = 1 medium peach
1 serving size = 1/2 cup chopped, cooked or canned fruit
1 serving size = 3/4 cup fruit juice
1 serving size = 1 cup mixed berries, cherries, chopped cantaloupe

Milk – Yogurt – Cheese

*low fat or fat free products are best
1 serving size = 1 cup milk or yogurt
1 serving size = 2 oz of natural cheese
1 serving size = 1 slice bread

Meat – Beans

1 serving size = 2-3oz cooked lean meat, poultry, or fish
1 serving size = 1/2 cup cooked beans
1 serving size = 2oz soy burger
1 serving size = 1 egg
1 serving size = 2 tbs peanut butter
1 serving size = 1/3 cup of nuts

I felt like I should include a food pyramid after reading about serving sizes

Now we know what 1 serving size is, in reference to ounces and cups. This is very valuable information, but if you don’t carry a food scale or measuring cups around with you may need another way to measure.

That’s where our trusty hands come in.

I love this little poster. I can measures my servings with my hand, very convenient.

Lastly I want to address food labels. I’ve had a love hate relationship on reading food labels. I never wanted to be the kind of person that checked labels before I ate, but I’ve turned into that person. Oh well, I find it interested to see what a serving size is, especially in pre-packaged food.

I wish I had more junk food in my cabinet, but I don’t.

Skippy Super Chunk Peanut butter
1 serving = 2 tbps
 Brown Rice – Rice Cakes
1 serving = 1 rice cake
Popped, Apple Cinnamon – Rice Cakes
1 serving size = 16 cakes

Top Ramen
1 serving size = 1/2 a package
That’s all today folks!
Blessings
Mary

My Take
I’ve tried to make Sun Salutations a regular morning routine for a few years. I always enjoy completing the sequence in the morning, I actually love the way it makes me feel, but somehow, no matter how great my body feels afterwards I slowly stop doing it. This time I’m really going to try to stick with it. Stretching in the morning is a great way to wake up your body and “mentally” check in with yourself to prepare for the busy day ahead. I’m taking this challenge with all of you. Lets try to make Sun Salutations a regular everyday routine. At least for the next 6-7 days 🙂

My Take
I’m on a quest to drop a couple of pounds. It seems like I’m always on this particular quest around this time of the year. Whenever I’m trying to slim down I make sure to eat my 5 servings of fruits. Not only are they good for me, but eating 5 servings will help keep me full. Lately I’ve been snaking on apples, grapes, bananas, pears, and mangos. This week we are all going to increase our fruit intake.

Self Improvement Challenge
I challenge you to fly a kite one day this week
Yep, I said fly a kite!

Challenge Synopsis
  • Fly a kite

  • You
  • A friend (optional)
  • A park with no power-lines around
Direction
  • Purchase or make a kite
  • Go out and fly it
My Take
Growing up we had regularly scheduled kite flying nights. I believe they were held on Tuesday nights, after school and work, the entire family piled in the car headed to our local park. It was so much fun getting the kites up in the air and keeping them there. It brought us closer together as a family and we weren’t in front of the TV. It was an excellent time to decompress, enjoy, and appreciate one another. I want all of you  to experience kite flying. Even if it sounds stupid to you just try it. You can fly a kite with family, friends, or by yourself. This week I’m going to make a kite, drag my non-kite flying boyfriend out to the Marina Green in San Francisco, and we are going to fly a kite.

That’s all today folks!
Blessings,
Mary

Memorial Day Crafts

Do you know what Monday is??? Memorial Day Baby! Most of you guys have a 3 day weekend.

There will be BBQs, picnics, hanging out with friends, and family gatherings. Holidays give me an excuse to create some cool crafts. Today I’m sharing a textured wreath and a 3-D star banner. Both of these crafts are kid friendly and pretty simple to create. Instead of bringing the cupcakes to the party, a bring handmade wreath and the cup cakes. lol

Have fun guys!!!

Memorial Day Rocket Wreath

Foam Wreath
Ribbon to wrap around foam
Hot glue and glue gun
6-8 packs red hot candy depending on the size of you wreath
coordinating ribbons
Dimensional magic spray polyurethane or resin to seal candy

Wrap wide ribbon around the wreath from and secure it with hot glue

Hot glue the red hot candies on the wreath start on front of wreath then continue to inside…

brush or spray on Dimensional Magic over top
** only brush once because some of the sugar from the candies might come off when wet

Tie red white and blue ribbon to wreath.

Hang and enjoy!

I had a dream about this project. I wanted a fun door hanger that screamed HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!! I wanted it to have texture and a few surprise elements. Tadaaa! I loved putting this project together. It took about an hour, which was a little longer then I thought it would take, to glue on the red hots. Even though I don’t have any kids, I think this project is great to do with kids. They can snack on the red hots and help with sticking them to the wreath. Try this craft, it’s fun, and impressive.

3-D Paper Star Banner

Red – White – Blue card stock
Hot Glue
String
Hole Punch
Medium to large star cutter optional

I purchased a star cutter from Michael’s. It was $25.00, I had a 40% off coupon so I paid about $15 for it. I’m sure I’ll use it in other projects. Go to Michael’s.com and sign up for free coupons. It’s defiantly worth the junk mail. 😉

If you don’t want to spend 15 bucks on a star cutter, draw a star, try to get it as perfect as possible, trace and cut out 5 starts

Cut out 5 stars

Fold Stars in half

Hot glue corners of the 5 stars creating a 3-D paper star

Create 10-15 more 3-D paper stars
this is why I opted to buy the star cutter

Punch holes at the top of each star
Sting stars together leaving about 1-2 inch space between each star

This was EASY, lots of fun, and kid friendly. The stars are simple to make once you get the hang of it, and the banner looks pretty sick when your done.

Enjoy the crafts friends!!!

Blessings,
Mary

Egg-Ceptional Recipes

You guys know I LOVE me some eggs. Most people scramble or fry eggs, but there are many many many different ways to prepare eggs. I’m not going to lie and say I’ve tried any of the recipes below until this week, but now I’m hooked.

Before we get fancy I’m going to teach all of you how to poach an egg. Everyone knows how to boil, scramble, and fry eggs, no reason to teach you what you already know. I didn’t know how to poach an egg and I figured all you were as clueless as me. If you already know please share some tips.

Opps, I’m getting ahead of myself, first lets address the healthiest way to cook an egg

Poaching
** It is said to be the healthiest method of cooking an egg
Poaching is an indirect, moist heat cooking method. Poached eggs contain 70 calories, has 6 grams of high quality protein, 4.7 grams of (mostly) unsaturated fat, high amounts of vitamin D, antioxidant compounds, and choline

Soft Boiled Eggs
** Second healthiest method of cooking an egg
Eggs are at their absolute best when the egg white turns harder, but not too much, and the yolk maintains its liquid-ness

Hard Boiled Eggs
** Third healthiest method of cooking an egg
Hard boiled egg yolks lose some, but not much of their natural goodness. They also take around 3 hours to digest

Scrambled Eggs
** Least healthiest method of cooking an egg
Calories add up depending on whatever oil you use to cook with , scrambling reduces most of the positive benefits of eggs. People tend to overcook their eggs when they scramble them, which diminishes its nutritional profile as well

How to poach an egg

Fresh eggs
1-2 tsp white vinegar (rice vinegar works well)
Shallow sauce pan with cover
Slotted spoon

Bring water in a sauce pan to almost a boil

*If water is already boiling lower heat until it is no longer boiling

Add vinegar to water (optional)

One by one crack an egg into a small cup

Whirl the water around the sauce pan creating a whirl pool

Place the cup near the surface of the hot water

With a spoon, nudge the egg whites closer to their yolks

*This helps hold the egg whites together

Turn off heat. Cover,

Set a timer!!!
Runny eggs takes 2 minutes
Medium eggs take 3 minutes
Firm eggs take 4 minutes
let sit for desired amount of time

Remove eggs with slotted spoon

Gently pat dry with paper towels

Tips:
Make sure your water is the correct temperature
*boiled but not boiling

Do not add salt to your water, salt breaks up the whites

Make sure to swirl boiling water creating a whirlpool effect
-work quickly and put the eggs in poaching water

How to Soft Boil an Eggs

Here comes the fun stuff. Now that you know the basics its time get a little more creative
All the recipes featured below are low fat
Enjoy!!!

Baked Eggs in Avocado

1 avocado
2 egg (smaller the better)
Salt and pepper

Preheat oven to 425 degrees F
Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil

Cut your avocado in half and remove the pit
Place avocado on baking sheet
Depending on how big the pit hole is you may want to use a spoon and scrape some avocado out to create a bigger hole
Hole needs to be big enough to fit an entire raw egg

Crack egg in avocado
Place on oven for 15-20 minutes depending on how you like your eggs
Sprinkle with salt and pepper and enjoy

Healthy Egg Benedict

1 cup low fat greek yogurt

1/8 tsp powdered turmeric
1 tbsp fresh dill
Juice of 1/2 lemon

4 slices smoked salmon

In a medium bowl, whisk together yogurt and turmeric until yogurt terms a pale gold

Stir in dill, lemon juice, horseradish, pepper, salt until combine

If you want the sauce warmer put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds

Top each toasted whole wheat english muffins half with a slice of smoked salmon, a poached egg, and a dollop of yogurt sauce

Sprinkle with chopped chives for garnish

Baked Eggs

4 eggs
1/2 cup good quality marinara sauce
Chevre Style goat cheese or shredded goat cheese
Basil or oregano as a garnish (optional)

Place a small, non stick sauce pan on your stove on med-high heat

Add 1/2 cup marinara and crack 4 eggs – one in each corner – over the sauce

Cover with lid and let cook for about 5-7 minutes or until eggs are slightly firm

Preheat your oven and set to “broil” at 500 degrees F

Once eggs are starting to set, remove pan from heat

Remove lid and add a few dollops of chevre style goat cheese on top of dish

Place pan under the broiler and cook until just slightly brown about 1-2 minutes

found at www.lindawagner.net

I had a great time making and eating all of these egg dishes. I hope you guys try a few and let me know how it turns out. The baked eggs are delicious, you have to try them! My boyfriend is Italian and he loved it.

Tomorrow we are diving into Memorial day decorations!

All About Eggs

We will be talking about eggs for the next 2 days!
Egg myth, facts, nutritional value, and healthy recipes.

Monday’s nutrition challenge was to add more eggs to your diet. If you know me, you know I’m not just going to tell you to do something without educating you on the benefits and drawbacks.

I have always had a love affair with eggs. I’ve eaten them regularly since I was a teenager. Eggs are cheap, tasty, nutritious, and easy to cook. I ate eggs almost everyday when I was over weight and I still eat them everyday now that I am at a healthy weight. When I was overweight I enjoyed cheesy scrambled eggs, egg salad, and deviled eggs. Now I enjoy a healthier lifestyle I eat my eggs mostly boiled and poached.

Lets start knocking out some age old myths about eggs

Debunking Egg Myths
**Isn’t debunking a fun word

Myth
Eating eggs raises your cholesterol
Facts
A single medium sized egg contains 186mg of cholesterol – 62% of the recommended daily intake. Eggs contain dietary cholesterol which does not have a big effect on the cholesterol circulating in your blood stream. Eggs are full of “good” cholesterol

Myth
You should only eat egg whites
Facts
Yes, egg whites are cholesterol free but there are tons of vitamins and nutrients packed in the egg yolk

Myth
Egg yolks are the devil
Facts
Egg yolks are packed with vitamins, minerals, calories, nutrients, as well as “good” cholesterol
Egg yolks are far from being the the devil

Myth
You shouldn’t eat eggs everyday
Facts
Eggs are known as the worlds perfect food. They are a great source of high quality protein, numerous studies have proven that cholesterol from food sources has little effects on the levels in your blood. Studies have also proved eating 2 eggs daily has no adverse effect on an healthy adult

That was fun! At one time I believed all these “myths” were true. I keep boiled eggs in my refrigerator for a healthy snack, extra protein for breakfast, or for my salads. I’ve never shyed away from egg yolk, it’s my favorite part of the egg. Egg whites are pretty much tasteless to me, all the flavor is in the yolk.

Nutritional Value Of Eggs

I had no idea that eggs contained so much good stuff.
I’m going to end this posting with a few fun random egg facts.

Fun Random Egg Facts

Eggs are laid by female animals of many different species, including birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish

Eggs have been eaten by humans for thousands of years

Worldwide, around 1.2 trillion eggs are produced for eating every year

The average person consumes 173 eggs a year

The brown or white color of an egg shell is only dependent on the breed of the hen
-White eggs are the color preferred in most of the US
-Brown eggs are the color preferred in UK

An eggs shell is made of calcium carbonate, which is also the main ingredient in some antacids

The color of an egg yolk is determined by the hen’s diet
– The more yellow and orange yolks are produced by a grain feed diet
– The pink or iridescent egg whites indicate spoilage and these eggs should not be consumed

That’s all today folks
Blessings,
Mary

My Take
I love love love eggs. Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, so it makes sense. During Mother’s Day weekend my Mother told me she started boiling eggs and only eating the egg white, she puts the egg yolk right down the drain.

As soon as I heard that I knew I had to do a blog posting about eggs. There are so many misperceptions about eggs, their nutritional value, the benefits of eating them, and the fact that egg yolk is full of “good cholesterol”. I’ll be taking about eggs all week.

My Take
Growing up we had planed game nights multiple nights a week. Wednesday was board game night and Friday was unofficially TGIF sitcom night. My Dad, Sister, and I played spades, betting pennies until the wee hours of the morning. Some of my favorite memories are staying up late on a Friday nights, playing spades and laughing my little butt off. Or running home from school on Wednesdays anticipating game night. As I get older I like playing games more than ever. I hope this challenge inspires you to play games and spend some time with your friends and family.

You got your challenges, Go forth and Complete them!
I hope everyone has a great week!

That’s All today Folks
